OVERVIEW
The Bachelor of Writing & Directing is a practice-led theatre-making degree delivered by Collarts – the Australian College of the Arts. Designed for born storytellers, the course is for students who can’t wait to write, direct and create original work for the stage – or breathe new life into contemporary texts and the classics.
Led by experienced lecturers who are active in the industry as writers, directors and award-winning theatre artists, students develop their voice and shape their own unique creative style.
This comprehensive course covers directing and production, theatre studies and dramaturgy, playwriting workshops and script assessing. Students learn how to build character, action, performance and world-building, gaining the skills to lead rehearsal rooms, direct actors, collaborate with designers and guide technicians in bringing transformative stories to life.
With a strong focus on career-readiness, students gain experience in pitching, grant writing and sought-after industry placements, while collaborating with peers across creative disciplines to build valuable professional networks.

Can I submit an application now?
Applications are not currently open. You can register an Expression of Interest for an expected Trimester 1 intake commencing February 2027. This ensures you receive timely updates and application information from Collarts.
When will applications open?
Applications are expected to open once regulatory approval has been confirmed, anticipated in March 2026. Applicants who register their interest will be notified directly by Collarts.**
Who awards the qualification?
The qualification is awarded by Collarts – The Australian College of the Arts upon successful completion of the course.
Where is the course taught?
Teaching takes place on campus at Sydney Actors School’s – Waterloo Campus, a purpose-built creative campus used by professional film and television productions and located within Sydney’s screen industry precinct.
