FOOLISH TO THINK
A GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER
Composer: Lyrics Robert Freedman and Steven Lutvak, Music Steven Lutvak
Production/Performer History: Broadway 2013 (Bryce Pinkham)
Context: Monty is the illegitimate descendant of the D’Ysquith family and in love with Sibella. She will not marry him because he is poor, so he plots to kill the 8 people ahead of him in line to the family fortune.
Choice: A pastiche early twentieth century musicals, drawing on everything from My Fair Lady to Gilbert and Sullivan. Gentleman’s Guide is a fun, subversive, modern show that uses a lot of classical techniques. You’ve gotta have chops for this score.
